Youth empowerment has led to immense progression when it comes to current societal issues on many accounts. House-hold names like Malala Yousafzai, Greta Thunberg, Sophie Cruz, and X Gonzalez are all examples of the power that youth can make a positive change. Malala believes that ‘Youth is the future driving force of change’ and encourages fellow young people to ‘Be bold [and] be active’. We have seen clear instances, time and time again that the voices of youth can bring people together and ignite a sense of comradery through tough times. There is a multitude of reasons why we must encourage more young individuals to vocalise their concerns, opinions, and ideas.

Through giving young people a voice and platform where why can be heard, we can gain diverse perspectives on the topics that impact millions around the world. This can therefore lead to create effective, efficient solutions and wield innovative ideas that may not have been considered by previous generations. The importance of inter-generational collaboration should not be overlooked. It enables those who are passionate about the same topic to take part in active decision making regardless of age. This means that knowledge as well as cultural and historical understanding can be passed down, fostering a sense of community.

Global issues like economic inequality, discrimination, education, climate change and sexual violence against women and children are widely impacting youth every day. Having a seat at the table can mean that youth can speak on the policies that specifically impact them to better meet their needs and ensure proactive action is being taken.

Sexual violence is a significant problem amongst youth, 44% of sexual assault victims were aged under 15 years when the incident occurred (2021). This alarming statistic is the reason why we need this representation. Empowered Together is a youth-led organisation, which gives the opportunity for young people to play role in the primary prevention of sexual assault. Our facilitators can use consent education to empower our community and raise awareness. This advocates for future generations to create an environment where all can feel safe and respected, and where survivors can feel supported.

Through my role as Content Contributor at Empowered Together, I feel as though I have been able to act on an issue that I deeply care about. I want the same for other people like me, who are wanting to invest their time into creating positive change towards a social issue that they are passionate about. Having an outlet where we can promote real, global actions means that we can prevent problems that have had greatly negative impacts in the past. As young people, we are keen to gain a collective responsibility and act with solidarity and the confidence that a better future is possible.

Young people have a unique perspective that cannot be replicated. We can drive social change and provide insights that reflect first-hand experiences. Youths should have the opportunity to speak on global issues affect them and their livelihoods to move toward eliminating the problem. When given the chance, many young leaders are willing and keen to spearhead innovation and make a difference for all.
